“All For One” Is a Song for Everyone
By Sara O’Connell
Singer-songwriter and Emersonian JOBIE (she/they) came through with another soft expression of love in her new single “All For One.” The song’s melancholy sounds fit perfectly in their wistful dream of a lover they once had. “All For One” has a grand scale of production with different instrumentation layered on each other seamlessly. A country-style lead guitar is paired with a gently strummed rhythm guitar with a hint of tremolo hanging in the air. Meanwhile, a light brush drum beat leads the “All For One” forward. The modest torch song details the highs and lows of falling in love.
JOBIE is no stranger to the Boston area. They’ve gigged at numerous venues in the underground scene and local pubs as their sound blends well into different spaces. When you see JOBIE live it’s a little more bare-bones than what you hear on recordings. Using just an acoustic guitar and her voice, she’s able to command the room’s attention. With songs like “Scorpio” and “Half Way” making their way around the local scene and the internet, JOBIE has carved out a clear niche for herself in the music community.
“All For One” tackles themes like heartache and imagination. As an artist, JOBIE has the unique ability to create detailed and intricate worlds to her lyrics, while still maintaining a sense of openness. It feels like the listener can fit right into her shoes but still walk their own walk. Lines like, “I made you out of silk” paint a picture of JOBIE hand-crafting her partner, and even with all that work they still haven’t lived up to her expectations. Haunting harmonies over lyrics like “I see you in the shadows of my hallway” help transport you right into JOBIE’s world.
It’s a special feeling when an artist has the tools to craft a separate cosmos when they start using their instruments. Whether you’re seeing it live or listening to it for the hundredth time that day, it feels like you’re listening to something unique. JOBIE truly shines beyond expectations when they share their music with all of us.
“All For One” is available on all streaming platforms starting today. If you’re hankering to hear any of these songs live, JOBIE will be opening for Sidney Gish at the Paramount on April 6th at 8 pm, free for all Emerson students.
