“Cauled Ones and Birth Rugs” by Natural Snow Buildings Oh Natural Snow Buildings, what would we do without you, our most esoteric soldiers? The French musical project of Solange Gularte and Mehdi Ameziane is one-of-a-kind, their 20-odd albums released over the course of less than 15 years seemingly pulling from the band’s experience on every…
“Green Eyes” by Erykah Badu “Green Eyes” by Erykah Badu is one of my favorite songs by her. This 10 minute jazz and soul inspired song is about the different stages of emotions that come after a devastating heartbreak. Much like our emotions, this song has different sections and phases. We follow Erykah Badu through…
“Boston” BY stella lefty Nowadays it feels impossible to escape some bland white person with a name that sounds like it came from a name generator website; Sombr, Ella Langley, Alex Warren… who are these people? It only gets even worse as Groupon and Tempus AI royalty Stella Lefty drops her hit single ‘Boston,’ it…
“Bros” by panda bear I truthfully don’t even know how to write about this song. It’s a looping centerpiece in Panda Bear’s discography, navigating abstract samples of yesterday and tomorrow. The lyrics are simple, narrating a strained dialogue between Lennox and his brother as they push-and-pull themselves between the distinct lines of childhood and adulthood….
“Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie” BY Joanna Newsom Ask any Joanna Newsom diehard what their favorite record by the singer-songwriter/harpist is and you’re sure to receive a different answer for every person, which is impressive considering that her catalog released over the last twenty-some years essentially consists of just four full-lengths and one EP. Some will…
“The One to Wait” by CCFX The summer I wandered with and without a destination, returned to my childhood home, scratched at persistent mosquito bites I thought would never heal, tried out sun-printing and beamed at the results, tearfully watched snow dust the Swiss alps, dipped my feet into various bodies of water, remembered how…
“Ingenue” by Atoms For Peace The beginning of this song reminds me of the first scene in Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. Stalactites dripping incessantly in the untouched hollows of the earth. Like saliva off the slack-jawed fangs of some granitic beast. Deep in those cratonic bowels where the water fell and sang. A death knell…
“Fuh You” by Paul McCartney Listen: I love the Beatles. Like, a lot. But it gets to a point… why was Paul McCartney, in his 70s, singing what he calls a “raunchy love song” in 2018? “Fuh You” was the first single off of his 17th—yes, seventeenth—single studio album and proves that sometimes artists should…
“Desired Constellation”, “Stonemilker”, “Isobel (Dim’s Ol’school Dubstremental) by Björk — Christian Jones “9-9,” “You Are The Everything,” “New Test Leper” By R.E.M — Lucca Swain “Some Song,” “No Name #6,” “Punch and Judy (Other Version)” By Elliott Smith — Julia Schramm “Inside Of Me,” “Where Life Begins,” “Rescue Me” – Madonna — Bennet Himmel “Logan…
