Single Review: “BROWN SUGAH” by Isaiah Falls

From Orlando, Florida, producer, rapper, and songwriter Isaiah Falls preaches the sentiment of indulgence in his newest EP, Lucky You. The first track, “Brown Sugah,” featuring SiR, exists as a melodic translation of fine silk, persuading listeners to give themselves up to their guilty pleasures. The intro is a collaboration of the soft whistles of a flute and high pitch chimes, reminiscent of a summer afternoon in childhood. Falls reveals himself proudly in his chorus, never failing to tell us what he wants: “Brown sugar, brown sugar, brown sugar.” I personally treat myself with vanilla ice cream, drowning in caramel, but in the end we all want the same thing: something sweet to make us feel just the right amount of guilt. Even when we’ve been satiated, he cues in listeners to the benefits gone unreaped. “Been here before (mm)/ But I never had it quite like this/ It’s the same, but it’s so different” is sung with a sticky desire that stays with his audience long after the song ends.
